Ex-WNY Xrossover/Geneva HS’s Devon Martin Jr. Contemplates Future Hoops Decision

With a few weeks left until college kicks off, AAU WNY Xrossover and Geneva High School’s (Geneva, N.Y.) Devon Martin, Jr. has to make a decision in due course.

He will either have to attend a prep school or enroll at a junior college if a four-year college hoops program doesn’t come calling.

Martin does posses the necessary basketball talent and grades to a play at a four-year college. But he has not had any luck as of yet, though his AAU Head Coach Kason Morrison said he has had looks from Division III SUNY Brockport and Hobart and Williams Smith, as well as a few JUCO schools.

“Junior knows how good he is, and he feels he doesn’t have to settle,” Morrison said. “But he’ll have to make a decision soon with college starting.”

But Morrison praised the 6-foot-5, 150-pound guard/small forward for his above-average basketball abilities and his academic prowess.

“He’s a freakish athlete, very coachable kid, and can jump out of the gym,” Morrison said of his hoops skills. “He has a great shot and a great basketball IQ. He’s a defensive-minded dog, and his overall average is B+. I think he’s not getting the recognition he deserves.”

But Martin is only 17, so he can afford a reclassification season or a year of hoops/studies at a JUCO, if he chooses to do so or other circumstances dictate it, to improve his hardwood abilities, gain some muscle, and increase his exposure.

“When he hones in on his talent, he’ll be unstoppable,” Morrison said. “He still hasn’t reached his level of highest potential, but he still has a few weeks to figure out what he wants to do.”

Martin possesses impressive stats both in AAU hoops and high school basketball, which bodes well for his athletic future. He averaged 25 points, 8.5 rebounds, two seals, and six blocks with WNY Xrossover.
