The St. John’s (NY) Basketball team has added former Rutgers (NJ) junior guard Montez Mathis, who entered the transfer portal at the beginning of the month, per Adam Zagoria’s Tweet today.
Mathis averaged 8.0 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game in 90 contests over three seasons as a Scarlet Knight. But his playing time dropped off this year.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Baltimore, MD, native is an unselfish player who will bring toughness to the Johnnies while providing strong defense for the squad.
Mathis was a high profile recruit out of The John Carroll School in Maryland.
Rutgers posted a 16-12 overall record and went 10-10 in Big 10 Conference action this past season.
The Red Storm put up a 16-11 overall mark and went 10-9 in the Big East Conference in the 2020-21 campaign.
