New York Jets Select Brooklyn’s Israel Abanikanda in 5th Round of NFL Draft


It looks like Izzy will be getting busy for the New York Jets in 2023, as they selected junior Pittsburgh Panther and Brooklynite Israel Abanikanda in Round 5 of the 2023 NFL Draft with the No. 143 overall pick, today the Jets Tweeted.

The former Abraham Lincoln High School and Pittsburgh Panthers running back star was one of the most explosive backs in this year’s NFL draft class. Abanikanda rushed for 1431 yards (six yards per carry) with 20 touchdowns on 239 touches last season for the Panthers.

Abanikanda rushed for 1,350 yards and 20 touchdowns on just 136 touches as a senior, as he guided the Rail-splitters to the PSAL Championship Conference semifinals. 

Abanikanda was a New York State football Gatorade Player of the Year recipient and the New York State Sports Writers Association (NYSSWA) honored with the 2019 High School Football Co-Player of the Year award.
