The Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association today has named Tobin Anderson, formerly of Farleigh Dickinson University (FDU) and now men’s head coach at Iona University, as the 2022-23 Peter Carlesimo Division I Coach of the Year.
This after Anderson took the 16-seeded Knights to the Second Round of the NCAA tournament and completed one of the greatest turnarounds in basketball history.
FDU finished the 2021-22 campaign with a 4-22 record. But Anderson helped guide the Knights to a 21-16 mark and knocked off Texas Southern in the NCAA First Four and then shocked No. 1 seeded Purdue in the First Round to become the first NEC team to reach the Round of 32.
FDU’s notoriety was not a surprise to anyone who has followed Anderson’s coaching career. He has enjoyed success at whatever school he has served as men’s head basketball coach. From Division III Clarkson and Hamilton to Division II St. Thomas Aquinas, the Truro, Iowa, native has amassed an impressive record. His combined Division I and II head coaching mark is a fantastic 230-78 (.747 W-L pct) and his overall career record across 22 seasons is a wonderful 415-207 (.667 W-L pct).
