It is time to check in on former PSAL players now in the college football ranks after week one. Here are how four New York City gridiron players fared this past week.
Israel “Izzy” Abanikanda — running back — Pittsburgh/Lincoln High School
The Pittsburg Panthers received a huge lift from Brooklyn native and former Lincoln High School football running back Israel “Izzy” Abanikanda, who broke three tackles en route to a 24-yard game-tying touchdown reception in the fourth quarter of the team’s 38-31 home win over West Virginia Thursday night.
Ale Wilson (running back, Buffalo State/Kipp College) and Tariq Nelson (wide receiver) — Buffalo State/Boys & Girls High School
Bronx native and ex-Kipp College running back Ale Wilson rushed for 70 yards and a score on just six touches, an average of 11.7 yards per carry, while Tariq Nelson (Brooklyn, NY/Boys & Girls) had six catches for 78 yards. Former Bayside High School quarterback and Queens, N.Y. native Tom Delgado completed six passes for 88 yards and a TD, with an interception.
But Division III Buffalo State fell to host St. John’s Fisher (Pittsford, N.Y.), 62-21, in the Bulls’ season opener on Saturday.
