The Cincinatti Reds have recently signed former Southern Maryland Blue Crabs catcher Joe DeLuca and have sent him to Triple-A Louisville., where he has played in two games through Monday.
While with the Blue Crabs of the Atlantic Professional of Baseball (ALPB) last season, the Cicero, N.Y., native laced .304 and drove in 70 RBI. Additionally, DeLuca, 25, batted .368 for the Federales de Chiriqui in winter ball, winning the Most Valuable Player award in the Panama Professional Baseball League.
Before his professional career, DeLuca played two years at Division II College of Saint Rose, in Albany, N.Y., where he slashed .269/.376/.392/.768 with five home runs and 41 RBI in 260 at-bats in 75 games. As a junior, he threw out 32 percent of would-be base stealers.
