The Division III St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) softball team manage a doubleheader split, capturing the first game, 6-3, and dropping the second, 9-0, to host Rutgers-Newark (5-6) on Saturday afternoon.
The 9-0 defeat was the Bears (9-2) first shutout loss of the season, snapping their eight-game winning streak.
Sophomore middle infielder Bella Gomez slugged a bases-clearing triple. Plus, reigning two-time Skyline Pitcher of the Week sophomore Autumn Poppett struck out four and scattered seven hits and five walks in a complete-game performance in the first contest of the day.
Additionally, Gomez went 2-4, driving in three runs and stealing a base while senior third baseman/catcher Ashleigh Hartwig (2 RBI, 2B) also rapped 2-for-4 and both players combined to drive in five runs. Senior shortstop/first baseman Alexis Buchanan knocked in the only other hit for St. Joseph, finishing 1-for-2 with a walk.
