Kelly O’Donnell needed 20 points entering Division III St. Joseph’s Brooklyn Women’s Basketball team’s game against Manhattanville to break the record as the most prolific scorer in Bears history.
O’Donnell scored a game-best 24 points to surpass the 2000-point mark and Rosanne Wahl’s ’00 old record at 2,004 points as the new St. Joesph’s scoring leader. But the Bears dropped their season finale, 89-65, on the road.
O’Donnell finished her college hoops career with 2009 points.
In St. Joesph’s opening possession of the fourth, O’Donnell completed a challenging drive and sank one from the free-throw line to reach the 2,000-point plateau. After a timeout to recognize O’Donnell’s milestone and a historic record broken in the following play, she picked up a quick transition basket to pull within two of tying the record.
Two possessions later at the 7:30 mark, it was only fitting that she would tie and break the mark with a three-point play. Alexis Breen fed O’Donnell with an entry pass over the top for an open look at a layup and was fouled and dropped in ensuing free throw for the record.
