Wagner’s Nicole Melious’ Outstanding Performance Breeds Hope for Staten Island Record-Breaking Season

Last night, in Wagner’s 87-49 Staten Island Class “A” victory over CSIHS/McCown at home, junior do-it-all guard Nicole Melious drained 45 points, reaching 1509 all-time for her high school hoops career.

Now, Melious sits at the 19th position all-time in Staten Island high school basketball history, girls and boys, with ten regular season games left to play on the PSAL schedule.

The question is: can Melious eclipse the 2000-point mark this season? She would need to average 49.1 points per game, but then there are the playoffs, which the Lady Falcons should make.

That will give Melious at least one more contest to add to her all-time points total. The ultimate goal, of course, is for Wagner to go as deep into the postseason as possible.

With that, the 5-foot-8 dynamo will continue to chase former Saint Joseph Hill Academy standout and current College of Staten Island Women’s assistant coach Kelcy Carey, who holds the Staten Island high school girls’ all-time points record with 2174 points.

Next, Melious will have her sights set on ex-Moore Catholic star and Notre Dame guard Kyle McAlarney’s Staten Island high school hoops all-time record of 2,566 points.

Nothing is a given, as the Lady Falcons and Melious will work hard to win and keep turning heads.

Wagner returns to action at home on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. versus Petrides.
