Hoopers NY made the trip over the weekend to the United States Junior Nationals (USJN) for the 15th Annual Windy in Indy Classic in Indianapolis, IN., and made it to the 17u championships, where the team lost, 81-63, to All-Ohio.
But it didn’t stop Susan Wagner rising sophomore Nicole Melious, who has garnered over 30 scholarship offers in two weeks, from giving it her all, draining 34 points, dishing out 8.1 assists, and collecting five rebounds per game in 11 contests.
Dan Melious, head coach of the Hoopers NY and her dad, said it’s tough to guard Melious even when opposing defenses key on her. He went on to note that high school basketball insiders compare her to two great female players.
What fans and coaches say about her? “It’s how well she performs even when the defense focuses on her. Most feel she plays a hybrid of Dara Mabrey (Notre Dame) and Katelynn Flaherty (Michigan all-time leading point-scorer).”
Additionally, Morgan Lee, who suits up for The Kent School (CT), had an impressive tournament, dropping in a double-double with 13 ppg and 17 rpg.
Staten Island Academy’s Saran Moschella added good numbers with 11 ppg, seven rpg, four apg 3 .5 steals per contests while Maya Cwalina of Archbishop Molloy chipped in with seven ppg, 10 rpg, and four blocks per tilt.
