It has been a strange year, and it will be even more peculiar for the St. Paul Saints, as they begin their American Association of Independent Professional Baseball title defense on Friday, July 3rd against the Sioux Falls Canaries as the road team at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Two other league games will take place that day, as the Chicago Dogs will visit the Milwaukee Milkmen, while the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks will host the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
The American Association will announce starting times at a later date.
The Saints will play two more games (4th, 5th) on the road, and enjoy a day off on July 6th.
But this is where it gets a little different, perhaps a bit confusing. Without changing venues, St Paul will switch roles and assume the home team status at “The Birdcage” against the same club, the Canaries, from July 7-9.
Yes, it’s a bit out of the ordinary, but the American Association is doing this so the league’s die-hard baseball fans can watch America’s past time while returning supporters to some sense of normalcy.
The American Association season will run from July 3-September 10 with a Championship Series, consisting of the top two teams from the regular season, to follow in a best-of-five game format starting on Saturday, September 12, and ending no later than Thursday, September 17.
The league will consist of six teams based in three separate “hubs.” The Saints will be grouped with the Sioux Falls at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Goldeyes are with Fargo-Moorhead at Newman Outdoor Field, home of the RedHawks. The Dogs are paired with Milwaukee at Ballpark Commons, home of the Milkmen.
Each team and ballpark will have in place, and enforce, COVID Readiness Plans, approved by local Health Departments and Government Officials. In order to allow for safe social distancing while enjoying a live, professional baseball game, ballparks will limit capacity.
The good news for the road squads is that the schedule will permit any of the three visiting clubs to return home for tilts if local governmental restrictions allow for games with fans in attendance.
The Saints play their first true road series against Milwaukee on July 10-12 and their first “home” games against a team other than the Canaries on Tuesday, July 14, when they begin a six-game homestand that starts with the Winnipeg Goldeyes. They play the Goldeyes from July 14-16 and then the Milkmen from July 17-19. Start times for all games in Sioux Falls will be announced soon, as well as the venues.
An abbreviated Spring Training will commence on June 25 prior to the July 3 Opening Day.
The Canaries promotional schedule and concession information will be released at a later date.
