After a year away from the New Jersey Jackals, the team announced during the week that they have signed former major leaguer Mat Latos for the 2020 season.
Latos, 32, was one of the best relievers in the Atlantic League, going 4-5 with a 1.06 ERA and a 0.647 WHIP in 50 appearances with the Southern Maryland Blue Claws in 2019.
Pitching as a starter and out of the bullpen, Latos spent 2018 with the Jackals, recording a 5-4 record with a 3.18 ERA over 76.1 innings in 29 appearances, including 10 starts, with 31 walks and 87 strikeouts, which ranked fifth in the Can-Am League.
The San Diego Padres selected Latos, an Alexandria, VA, native, in the 11th round (333 overall) of the 2006 MLB First-Year Amateur Draft out of Coconut Creek High School (FL), and he signed with the club in 2007.
Latos made his Major League debut in 2009 with San Diego and has pitched with a total of eight MLB teams during his nine-year Big League career, posting a 71-59 mark with 3.67 ERA in 1153.1 innings of work in 197 tilts.
The 2019 Can-Am League Champion New Jersey Jackals professional baseball team plays at Yogi Berra Stadium in Little Falls, NJ, on Montclair State University’s campus. The Jackals play a 96-game schedule in the newly formed Frontier League from May through September.
