The New York Mets signed Cuban outfielder Gerson Molina for $175,000 in August of 2018 in the international draft.
Last night for the Mets’ Single-A South Atlantic League (SAL) affiliate Columbia Fireflies, Molina, who was added to the roster just hours before first pitch, made his presence felt in his professional debut.
He stroked two hits: a two-run double in the second inning, and knocked in another run in the ninth, finishing the night with a nice 2-4 performance in Columbia’s 7-6 defeat to the Lexington Legends (Kansas City Royals) at Segra Park.
The 23-year-old is known as a good athlete and for his defensive prowess in the outfield.
Though he played sparingly in Serie Nacional for Ciego de Avila, and it’s too early to tell just how he good he is, it will be fun to watch him develop.
