The top-seeded Lady Jets almost made it look too easy early on in their second round Class B playoff tilt against No. 17 Academy of American Studies. But Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology coasted in the second half, making it more of a game than it should have been, head coach Michael Lloyd noted.

However, the Lady Jets prevailed in the end, beating the Lady Eagles, 51-34, Tuesday night at Hebrew Education Society’s Gym.

But head coach Michael Lloyd said he wasn’t pleased with BHSLT’s overall lackluster team effort.

“They played down to the competition, and a week off from break, that didn’t help. But it is what it is,” Lloyd said. “It’s the playoffs. You got to play. You win or you go home. We won, but you got to play your best. So, we got to start playing our best,” which, he noted, the Lady Jets didn’t.

More importantly, he said, a win is a win, and BHSLT will move on to the next round, in which it will face the winner of the Taft-Spring Creek contest, in the quarterfinals.

The Lady Jets jumped out to a commanding 21-4 advantage in the first period. BHSLT built on that lead in the second quarter, going into the locker room ahead by the score of 32-12.

But missed easy shots by BHSLT, while the Lady Eagles played better against the opposition, led to them outscoring the home squad, 13-10, in the third period.

Fortunately for the Lady Jets, they had done enough in the first half to hold a comfortable 42-25 by the end of the third stanza.

Each team scored nine points in the final quarter, more than good enough to secure the victory for BHSLT.

Sophomore Kaila Dawkins drained a game-high 16 points, while junior point guard Kiya Marquez contributed 8 in the win.

Freshman guard Angela Zhuo dropped in a team-best 14 points and sophomore forward Mickayla Delack added 12 for Academy of American Studies.
