Junior point guard Kiya Marquez needed 18 points to reach the 1000-point mark for her career at Brookln High School for Law and Technology. Marquez accomplished that with a three-pointer with 3:44 left in third quarter of the Lady Jets’ Class B game against EBC/Bushwick Leaders, which they won, 76-10, Wednesday night at the Brooklyn Stuy Dome.
What makes Marquez’s milestone even more impressive, is that she has done it in only a year and half at Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology, and is now the program’s all-time leading scorer.
“If she played with the program since her freshman year, she might have close to 2000 points now,” Lady Jets head coach Michael Lloyd said, as she spent her first year of high school at a charter school in Harlem. “She came (here) and had a great year last year, and she’s having a better year this year.”
Big reasons for her improvement? “She’s much more mature, on and off the court,” Lloyd said. Plus, “She’s showing more leadership. She always talking to her teammates in games and in the locker room. And no matter who we play, she’s ready to go.”
Though Marquez sported a huge smile, she managed to downplay the achievement.
When asked how it felt to reach 1000 points, Marquez simply replied, “It feels good. Hard work pays off.”
Looking to exact revenge for last campaign’s Class B Finals 44-43 defeat to John Jay Campus, Marquez said this year will be different. “I think we’re going to win the championship.”

Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology (16-2) never once trailed in the game, running out to a 29-0 lead with 1:41 remaining in the second period before the Panthers (5-8) scored their first three points of the contest 44 seconds later.
The Lady Jets continued to pummel EBC/Bushwick Leaders, taking a 31-4 advantage into the locker room, and kept that up with 25-2 third quarter.
The rest of the tilt saw pretty much of the same, as Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology won going away.
Marquez drained a game-high 23 points in the victory, while sophomore Barbara Bruno contributed 17. Sophomore Kaila Dawkins and freshman Tamia Maxwell chipped in with 13 and eight, respectively.
The Lady Jets play Class AA Manhattan Center in the Rose Classic Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Canarsie High School.
