After having an off-night scoring-wise against Senton Hall, point guard Shamorie Ponds drained a game-high 26 points in the Red Storm’s 89-69 blowout win versus No. 16/18 Marquette (11-3, 0-1) Tuesday night at Carnesecca Arena.
In addition, the Brooklyn-born Ponds grabbed seven rebounds and dished out a contest-best five assists. The conference leader in steals, the junior also recorded a pair of steals.
A great game, to say the least.
However, the Thomas Jefferson High School alum Ponds didn’t do it alone. All five St. John’s starters scored in double digits: Marvin Clark II had 22 points, Mustapha Heron (16), Justin Simon (12) and LJ Figueroa (11).
Junior guard Heron led all players with eight boards, while Simon contributed five. The Jonnies matched the Big East’s top rebounding squad with 35 boards.
The Red Storm (13-1, 1-1) defense held guard Markus Howard, the Big East leader in points (25.1), to a season-low eight points.
St. John’s will commence a two-game Big East road trip by traveling to Georgetown Univeristy for a Saturday affair at 1:00 p.m. on CBS and 570 AM WMCA. After that, the Red Storm heads to Villanova for a Tuesday contest against the reigning national champs.
