Oh, what a difference a year makes.
Last season, in its second game on the PSAL schedule, Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology lost, 59-57, to East New York Family Academy. It was the Lady Jets’ only defeat in the B Conference.
This year, however, Brooklyn High School for Law and Tech (7-0, 8-2) annihilated the Lady Eagles, 79-28, in a PSAL Class B2 East game Thursday night at I.S. 318. It was the second time BHSLT beat ENYFA this season.
Head coach Michael Lloyd contributed the team’s improvement to a scrappy group of freshman (Queen Brunson, Mie Lin Calliste, Ta Mia Maxwell) and a year more of hard-scrabbled experience for the returning players.
“Three of our freshman are tough,” Lloyd told BrooklynSportsWorld.com. “You add that in with the three (Kiya Marquez, Barbara Bruno, Kaila Dawkins) we had last year, mixed in with the other girls, and we have a pretty good group.”
The Lady Jets used the offensive prowess of four players, who all scored in double digits, to upend their foes.
Junior point guard Marquez lead the way with 30 points. Brunson contributed 11, while sophomores Bruno and Dawkins posted 10 apiece.
In addition, BHSLT’s tough pressure trap defense forced ENYFA (5=2, 6-4) to cough up the rock several times, which led to many baskets on the other end of the floor.
The Lady Jets raced out to an 18-9 lead in the first period. With Marquez heating up, BHSLT built a 39-18 commanding advantage at half time.
Marquez rained down on the Lady Eagles, posting 16 points, which helped to extend the BHSLT’s lead to 65-23 in the third quarter.
With some of the backups inserted in the tilt, the Lady Jets didn’t relent, outscoring the opposition, 14-6, in the fourth period to secure the win.
BHSLT will travel to Maxwell High School tomorrow for a 4:30 p.m. Class B game.
