After losing in controversial fashion to John Jay Campus in the PSAL Class B Championship game last year, it’s easy to see that the Lady Jets are set to blast the competition this year.
Case in point: Brooklyn High School for Law & Tech, behind dominate performances by junior Kiya Marquez (29 pts) and sophomore Kaila Dawkins (15 pts), dispatched division rivals Spring Creek Campus, 74-27, Thursday night on the road.
Sophomore Barbara Bruno chipped in with 14 points.
The win improves the Lady Jets to 5-0 in league play, plus a non-league victory against AA Midwood.
But head coach Michael Lloyd said Brooklyn High School for Law & Tech has added a few new, key players, extending its bench, and have a year of hard-earned maturity underneath its belt. It has made the Lady Jets a more complete squad.
“The biggest difference between this year and last year is the depth. We’re able to have more competitive practices, which has made us better,” Lloyd said. “And they’re starting to mature. We now have championship experience, so we’ll see what happens this year.”
BHSLT jumped out to a 20-8 first quarter lead. Marquez scored 10 points in the second period, lengthening their advantage to 39-19 at the half.
Dawkins was a defensive force and added five points. Marquez matched her teammate’s scoring output with five points of her own, while the Lady Jets’ stalwart defensive held the Ravens (3-2) to a mere two points as it widen its commanding lead to 56-21 in the third quarter.
The fourth period was pretty much of the same shellacking the BHSLT delivered to Spring Creek all contest long as they dribbled away with the decisive win.
The Lady Jets will travel to Maryland to face South Lakes (VA) at the She Got Game Classic at Bishop McNamara Saturday at 5:15 p.m. in non-league action. Then, the following day, BHSLT will play Sidwell Friends (DC) at 9:00 a.m. at the Athletic Republic 5 in the same tournament.
