In just two weeks’ time, New York Mets’ 2018 first round draft pick Jarred Kelenic belted his way to a promotion to the Rookie League Kingsport Mets, the next rung up the Mets’ minor league ladder, the team announced yesterday.
The soon-to-be 19-year-old smacked .413/.451/.609 with one homer, nine RBI, two doubles, two triples, four walks, four stolen bases, and nine runs scored in 46 at-bats in 12 games with the Gulf Coast Mets.
Kingsport is facing the Greenville Reds tonight, and Kelenic and Jonathan India are debuting for each team.
Although New York selected Kelenic, a native of Waukesha, Wisconsin, with the sixth overall pick in the MLB amateur draft, India was mocked to the Mets for a majority of the spring, according to media reports. But Cincinnati had already plucked him with the fifth overall selection.
Another productive run could land Kelenic in Brooklyn before the ’18 season concludes.
