Columbia hurler Anthony Kay fired seven innings of one-run ball en route to a Fireflies’ 9-2 victory over the Greenville Drive (11-36, Boston) Saturday at Spirits Communication Park in a South Atlantic League (SAL) game.
The New York Mets 2016 first round draft pick, Kay (2-2) scattered five hits while striking out a pro career-best eight batters and lowered his ERA to 3.59 on the season. Kay, a Long Island, New York, native threw 96 pitches in his eighth start of the year.
The Columbia (26-21) offense was on point Saturday. Left fielder Matt Winaker laced a two-run triple down the right-field line in the third frame. Second baseman Blake Tiberi added two RBI of his own, while Mets first base prospect Jeremy Vasquez, who is batting .314 on the season, also had a RBI, his twenty fifth of the campaign.
The Fireflies’ bullpen of Darwin Ramos and Connor O’Neil closed out the game with two innings of one-run ball.
