The good fortune keeps coming for Columbia Fireflies’ first baseman Jeremy Vasquez.

After slugging .360 (9-for-25) with five extra-base hits (three doubles, a triple and a home run), four RBI, five runs scored and two walks in seven games for the week of April 23rd-29th, the South Atlantic League (SAL) named Vasquez its Player of the Week, the SAL announced today.

In addition, Vasquez, the New York Mets 28th round pick in the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft, has reached base in all his 23 starts this season, which is a Fireflies’ record.

Furthermore, he leads Columbia in batting average, on-base percentage, OPS (on-base + slugging), doubles, RBI and walks. Plus, the 21-year-old former Brooklyn Cyclone ranks top 10 in the SAL in all six of the following categories: 9th – .325 batting average; 4th – 7 doubles; 2nd – .455 on-base percentage; 7th – 17 RBI; 4th – 1.000 OPS; and 1st – 20 BBs.

Fireflies manager Pedro Lopez said that it’s the way Vasquez handles himself in the batter’s box that’s been responsible for his offensive production this year.

“His approach at the plate allows him to have this much success,” Columbia manager Pedro Lopez said.  “He’s been able to go out there and consistently have quality at bats. This stood out to me even back in spring training.”

A Nova Southeastern University (Davie, FL) product, the Palm City, Florida, native also appeared in two College World Series with Florida before transferring to NSU.
