New York Mets’ Prospect Andres Gimenez off to solid start with Columbia Fireflies

New York Mets’ prospect Andres Gimenez has reached safely in his first six games with the Columbia Fireflies (Mid-A full-season South Atlantic League), batting .304 with a home run, three RBI, seven hits and four walks.

Inked to an international free agent contract at 16, Gimenez, a Venezuelan shortstop, played two season with the Dominican Summer League Mets, slugging .350 with four long balls and 41 RBI in 234 at-bats in 62 games.

At the time of his signing in 2015, Baseball America ranked Gimenez as the second-best international prospect.

Gimenez is now 18, and is faring pretty well with the Fireflies. However, due to his tender age, he could drop a level or two, possibly ending up in short-season Single-A Brooklyn (New York-Penn League) to test his playing ability before larger crowds.

With a dearth of minor league talent at the shortstop position—Gimenez, Amed Rosario, Gavin Cecchini and Gregory Guerrero, another international prospect whom Baseball American ranked sixth on its same 2015 list—it will be very interesting how it all plays out.

But Rosario seems to be the obvious frontrunner right now, to man the position in the future. So, the other shortstops could be used as trade bait, or added depth in New York’s farm system and at the Major League level.
