Columbia Fireflies starting right-handed pitcher Merandy Gonzalez is on fire.
The former Brooklyn Cyclone picked up his third consecutive win, scattering three hits and fanning seven hitters without surrendering a run in seven innings en route to a Fireflies’ 5-0 victory over the Lexington Legends (Kanas City Royals) Friday night at Spirit Communications Park.
Gonzalez, 21, has opened the season with a 3-0 record and has yet to allow a run across 20.2 frames. In three starts, The Cotui, Dominican Republic native, who Baseball America named as New York’s 2017 breakout prospect, has permitted just 10 hits, whiffed 18 batters and allowed only one walk during that span.
Gonzalez joins Jordan Humphreys as the only hurlers in all of minor league and major baseball with 3-0 records.
Note: Outfielder and former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow recorded his first multi-hit game (3-for-3, double, walk) of the season.
